EXCELSIOR JONES

Excelsior Jones opened at the beginning of this year and it has definitely been the talk among foodies. Ashfield is not known for its cafes, so this little gem located among residential houses along Queen St, is making a name for itself.

Today was a cold and rainy day, so it was ideal to sit in a neat cozy cafe enjoying good food with a good friend. We arrived a bit after 1:30pm and the little cafe was packed with people. After 15 minutes or so we were lucky enough to get a table in the dining room.

Caramel Milkshake
The caramel milkshake was a bit watery, I expected it to be thicker but nonetheless it tasted good and it really satisified my milkshake cravings :)

Cheeseburger - Grass fed Angus beef, Gruyere, Tomato relish, Aioli, Fried spuds | $16
The winner of the cheeseburger dish was not the burger but the fried potato gems on the side! SO GOOD!! We liked it so much we even asked if we could order a separate plate of it, but unfortunately you can't :( The burger was just like an ordinary cheeseburger but the Angus beef was really soft and full of flavour. The tomato relish was a little bit overpowering but other than that it was an enjoyable dish. buttttttt the potatos were the BEST :D

Eggs Benedict - Black forest gypsy ham, hollandaise, celery salt | $14
The poached eggs were cooked to PERFECTION!! I was so happy when I cut it open and the yellow yolky goodness ran down, this was hands down one of the best eggs benedict that I have eaten. Everything on the plate balanced really well together.

Genius potato chips
Again- THE BEST POTATO CHIPS!! :D

The service was really good even though they were extremely busy, someone always assisted us when we needed help.

The price of the food is standard for cafe food and for the quality I think it was reasonable, however some people may find it a bit pricey. The bill came to a total of $40.50- but my tummy was happy... my wallet survived.

I was bit disappointed because they ran out of House Cured Salmon Hash and that was the one dish that I wanted to try but other than that I was very happy with the experience at Excelsior Jones :) I definitely will be back to try the many other dishes Excelsior Jones has to offer!

Recipe
Preparation and cooking time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
  • Puff pastry (thawed if frozen)- comes in a pack of 6 sheets
  • 300g sour cream
  • 125 diced bacon // 4 slices of bacon
  • 4 eggs
  • Sprinkle of thyme
  • Sprinkle of salt and pepper for flavour
Method:
  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degree Celsius (Fan forced).
  2. Grease a 30cm tart pan with either oil or butter- make sure you grease it well to prevent the pastry sticking.
  3. Remove pastry from plastic wrapping and place it into pan and place another sheet of pastry diagonally.
  4. Cut 8 slices of thin pastry from left overs and twist them and decorate the sides. Brush the edges with water and press lightly onto them to prevent it from falling off.
  5. Mix the sour cream, diced bacon, thyme and salt and pepper into a bowl. Once it is thoroughly mixed together pour it onto the pastry.
  6. Make 4 indentations with a spoon and carefully crack the eggs into the indentations.
  7. Bake for about 20 minutes until the eggs are set.
  8. Serve once cooled down.

Enjoy :)

Ok I admit that it doesn't look that nice but it taste sooooo good!!! It's all about the flavour for me :)

Whattt a video! Enjoy!! :D

ICHI-BAN BOSHI (The Galeries Victoria)

On a cold night it's good to eat hot food with good friends :) So originally we wanted to eat at Wagamama but after asking around we heard that it's quite pricey and the food isn't that work it (but I'll try it one day and give an officialy verdict :P).

We arrived at Ichi-Ban Boshi around 5pm so we easily got a table for 3 people. I know from previous experience that Ichi- Ban Boshi gets really busy during peak hours like lunch time (12pm-2pm) and dinner time (6pm-7:30pm)- so I highly recommend you show up early if you don't want to wait.

I've haven't been to Ichi- Ban in so long so I completely forgot what was good and what was the "must" to order! I ended up ordering the Yakisoba omelette (and it was so worth it!!)- the omelette was massive!! When the waiter brought my plate over I even said "whoa that's huge!" as I was extremely hungry I finished it all :D

Before I finished my meal a waiter came over and just took my plate. I had food in my mouth so I was trying to tell her I wasn't finished, so I just pulled the plate down and my friends explained to the waiter I wasn't finished. The waiter didn't really ask me at all if I was finished at all- a very unique and funny experience.

The prices of the food are very reasonable because the portion of food is so big and it is definitely value for money :)

Now to the food......
